Expert Speakers

Our event brings together a roster of esteemed presenters, including Jane Buckland, FNAO, FCLSA (H), NCLE, Diane F. Drake, LDO, ABOM, NCLEM, FNAO, and Phernell Walker, II, MBA, ABOM, LDO.

With over 50 years in the field, Jane Buckland, FNAO, FCLSAH, NCLEM is a seasoned contact lens expert and clinician. After her Optometric Sciences degree in 1971, she trained at the University of Florida. She's held pivotal roles with the National Academy of Opticianry and the Contact Lens Society of America. A past president of the Pacific Coast Contact Lens Society, she's consulted for giants like Barnes-Hind and Vistakon. Her contributions span teaching, event participation, and numerous articles on contact lens innovations. She's the force behind Space Coast Contact Lens Consultants.

Diane F. Drake, LDO, ABOM, NCLEM, FNAO brings over four decades of optical industry experience to her presentations. Having served as the past president of various optical organizations, including the National Academy of Opticianry and the South Eastern Opticians Conference, her courses on prism and lenses will be nothing short of enlightening. Attendees can expect to gain a deep understanding of these optical principles and their applications in optometry.

Phernell Walker, MBA, ABOM, LDO, NCLEC, is a distinguished national speaker with a deep passion for optics and business. He penned the textbook "Pure Optics," widely used in optometry colleges, and previously taught at Pacific University College of Optometry. Among a select few with a Master's in Ophthalmic Optics, Phernell holds key roles with the American Board of Opticianry, Opticon, and the Opticians Association of America. He's the VP of Optometric Relations at VSP Eyefinity and has been honored with awards like the Joseph Bruneni Award and the NAO Educator of the Year for his contributions to optics.

This course is intended to demonstrate to the participant an overview of fitting and design techniques observed over four decades. Designed to aid the participant in achieving greater success in the selection and fitting of soft toric lenses. This presentation will explore the various types of lens designs and modalities available for the astigmatic patient. An explanation to the participant on how to gain skills to objectively address fitting as well as follow up challenges will be discussed.

Fitting and Dispensing Pediatric Eyewear

With one-fourth of the population in the USA being 14 and under and 25% of children requiring some form of vision correction, there is a huge market for dispensing to children. This course is designed to help increase your pediatric practice. This session will include internal as well as external marketing, in office merchandising, communicating with children and their parents, and dispensing eyewear. Identifying specific needs in fit, fashion and function for eyewear on children will be discussed.

Managing Difficult Frame Fits

Being able to fit and adjust eyewear may appear to be simple, and it well could be, but not every dispenser has been able to master this particular art. This course will discuss the reasons that eyeglasses fit badly and some solutions for solving these challenges. Included in the discussion will be the fitting triangle, facial anatomical differences, sensitivities, prescription challenges with frames and certain materials, as well as individual preferences. Effectively being able to communicate with the patient will also be discussed.

The Art and Science of Ophthalmic Lenses

Ophthalmic lenses are artful arrays that provide clear vision. Designing the most optically precise and cosmetically appealing lens shouldn’t be left to common myths and optical roulette. This course explores lens design from Single Vision, Near Variable Focus Lenses, Lined Multi-focal, Progressive Lens designs, implications of refractive index, lens thinness, and secrets to designing the most optically precise work of art for your eyes.

The Optics of Wrap Lenses

Trendy eyewear with excessive wrap frame and lenses will mechanically change the nominal prescription and induces unwanted prism. It’s essential for opticians and optometrists to understand and solve these adverse changes. This course will cover how to calculate prism, and the effective power sphere, cylinder, axis of wrap lenses and explore real world solutions to this common problem.
