AI scribes underdeliver on cutting down after hours charting: Study

A large study of over 8,500 clinicians found that AI scribes reduced documentation time by only 13-16 minutes per day and did not significantly decrease after-hours electronic health record work. While primary care providers and female clinicians saw the greatest benefits, the time savings allowed for approximately one additional patient visit every two weeks. Eye care professionals considering AI scribes should temper expectations, as the technology appears to redistribute rather than eliminate documentation burden. The modest improvements may be most beneficial for high-volume practices where even small efficiency gains can accumulate, but the technology has not yet delivered the substantial reduction in administrative workload that many healthcare providers hoped for when investing in these systems.
